TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Like just about everything else regarding amphibians, those who try to insure them are breaking new ground.
Do you insure it as a car? Boat? Or do you need two policies?
Bob DeKorne, client resources manager for Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in insuring classic cars and boats, said the company has helped numerous Amphicar owners.
Before insuring with Hagerty, many owners of the most successful amphibious car ever built would insure it as a car and either ignore liability on the water or buy a separate policy for the vehicle’s use a as a boat.
All cars operated on Michigan roads must have auto insurance, but DeKorne said that like most states, Michigan does not require boats to be insured.
Still, many owners want to have insurance, particularly in case of environmental damage, he said. For example, a gas tank leak could lead to a costly cleanup.
DeKorne said that the Michigan Attorney General has ruled that a car’s liability coverage does not carry over when the vehicle is used on water. That’s why Amphicar owners bought two polices.
But since Hagerty has experience with both classic cars and boats, it was able to craft a policy saving Amphicar owners money, DeKorne said.
Because of that experience Hagerty could be a prime source for coverage of the modern range of amphibians that are about to hit the market.
